This past holiday season was probably the best I've ever had.
I made a big decision that influenced it a ton.
I chose balance over insanity.
I actually said "no" to those last-minute-larry's that wanted me to do sessions the week before Christmas.
I did most of my shopping online so I didn't become an evil grinch if someone stole my parking spot or cut in line in front of me.
I turned off my computer in the evening.
We lit fire's in the fireplace, and relaxed with family.
I did crafts I found on Pinterest, and cooked recipes that I'd wanted to try for years.
I breathed in deep. And was mindful. And sat and watched. And listened.
And embraced all the newness my 18 month old daughter discovered as she seemed to finally (kinda) understand the concept of Christmas.
It was beautiful.

Balance.
It's my biggest enemy.
We fight way too much.
I've tried to break up with him so many times, but he keeps coming around.
I'm learning to let him win.
Stop putting up such a fight.

2012.
It's a new year.
I'm ready for change.
Ready for more freedom to enjoy what's most important in life.
More balance.

One of the first steps is to begin the new year with a new blog!
A new storefront.
I'm ironing out all the wrinkles as you read this.

I photographed Marina and Aaron's engagement session a few weeks ago, and because they are dear friends of mine, I was super excited to shoot their wedding.

As I was walking up to Marina's room at The Doubletree Hotel, I knew I would be able to tell right away if she was nervous, overwhelmed, unhappy with her hair, or needed me to make her feel at ease.
But when I walked into her room, she was the calmest bride I've ever seen! Completely ready, happy, relaxed and looked absolutely STUNNING.

They chose to do their "first look" prior to the wedding and I discreetly shot the pictures, while watching them sweetly interact, looking so happy, relaxed and excited to begin their new life together.

I saw this wedding not only through the eyes of a photographer, but also as a friend that was fortunate enough to witness the beginning of their relationship blossom, and now turn into a lifelong commitment, and it was very special to me.

Before the wedding, I gave Marina a handkerchief I was given at my wedding (something borrowed!) and told her to wrap it around her bouquet stem, just in case she got emotional and needed it during the ceremony. She smiled and explained, she'd be fine and didn't think she'd need it.

Sure. Everything is just fine. Until you're standing in front of your closest family and friends, staring at the person you're going to spend the rest of your life with, promising to be with him for (GULP) forever and ever, until "death do us part".

As they shared their vows, I saw the tears well up in Marina's eyes. And I got goosebumps. And then I choked up myself.
A quick vision of the first time Aaron came over to our apartment danced through my head, never realizing at the time, it may come to this day.

I thought about how honored I was that they chose me to capture one of the most important events of their lives.

This blog post is a bit longer than most, but this was wedding holds a special place in my heart and I didn't want to leave a thing out.

Congratulations Marina and Aaron. I love you both with all my heart. Have an amazing honeymoon in Mexico!

I had the great opportunity to shoot with Carlie Davis for a wedding that quite possibly was the most beautiful day of summer. As I took the coast down to Newport Beach, I must have thought it was a "perfect day for a wedding" 100 times.
Christy, the bride had a dress so stunning, that I literally took a deep breath when she put it on. All the frills and chiffon a girl would ever want! And the cowboy boots- too fun!

Her dress..... can we talk about how UH-MAZING her dress is?

They got married just before sunset on Newport Beach. It was gorgeous out!

The reception was held at The Bella Mar in Newport Beach. The venue was right on the water with a old mansion vibe, with beautiful chandeliers and dark velvet accents.

For the grand romantic gesture, a gondola picked up Christy and Russell to take them back to their honeymoon suite at The Balboa Bay Club.

Shooting an engagement session with good friends is so fun. There is no uncomfortable introduction or shyness in front of the camera with me.

I've known Aaron since I was in junior high and I met Marina soon after. A few years ago, Marina and I were roommates and they started dating when we were living together.

I remember her asking me what I thought of him before they went out. I said, "He's a really cool guy. Very chill, easy going. Likes to surf."

I thought immediately they were a good match since Marina is also very sweet and easy going.

The first time he came over, he cooked for us. I remember thinking, "A cook too? BONUS!"

So now five years later, they're tying the knot. And not only do I get to witness it, but I get to capture it with my camera. I feel so lucky.

Congrats to my beautiful friends, inside and out.

A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity of shooting with a very talented photographer, David Miller.
The ceremony and reception took place at Nessah Synagogue in Beverly Hills. It was a gorgeous venue.
David had asked my experience with shooting Jewish weddings because of the many specific traditions and that the reception can be pretty crazy.
He wasn't kidding!
Before the ceremony, the men congregated in an area and sang and prayed, while the bride was congratulated by all the woman in another area of the synagogue.
After the prayers, Jason and the men danced and sang towards Danielle for their first introduction. Jason pulled Danielle's veil up to get his first look at the stunning bride. It was a beautiful moment.
They continued their vows in the synagogue and as soon as they were introduced as husband and wife a HUGE celebration erupted.
A partition was placed in the middle of the dance floor while the men danced on one side and woman danced on the other.
Some of the men dressed in funny costumes and danced on each other's shoulders to entertain the newlyweds.
The woman danced in circle's and swung a long rope made out of napkins tied together while the bride and groom jumped over it.
It was something I have never experienced before and it was an incredible celebration.

Picture this:
Two fifteen month old twins.
With free reign on a golf course.
No golfers playing, and acres of area to roam.
And run.
And explore.

Now picture this:
One overwhelmed mom trying to keep her daughters within a two foot vicinity of one another, with bows in place and golf shoes in tact.
A perfectionist photographer with a very limited time to get some great shots for a Father's Day gift.
And an overcast day with a ton of glare- (can you say squinty?)

Here's the outcome:
After some blood (I'm kidding), some sweat (okay A LOT of sweat) and a few tears (the twins, not us), we conquered our challenge and got some cute pictures!

and about 30 seconds after the prior picture was captured...

and for the bloopers... lots and lotsa chasing going on...

I love my job :)

daddy's day.

I can't remember the exact day I stopped saying Daddy and resorted to Dad.
It may have been a slow process, shortening it once in awhile out of laziness, but I can't recall exactly how old I was.

I do know that now that I'm a parent, the day that Mommy turns into Mom, I may shed a tear or two.
Of course in the shower where no one else can see.

The joy I have in watching my own father interact with my baby girl, is so special. Delaney is his only granddaughter. He's told me numerous times she reminds him a lot of me when I was that age.

He teases her a ton, just as he did with me.
He messes up her hair and bites her little toes, just as he did with me.
It's a beautiful thing to watch the connection other family members have with your child and I'm so fortunate I live so close to mine.

Before our daughter, Delaney was born, I knew my husband Scott was a team player.
I cook, he does the dishes.
I do the laundry, he puts away the clothes.
We take turns letting each other sleep in on the weekends.
He's the guy you can count on.
It's one of the main reasons I wanted to marry him.

But once we had our daughter, and once I saw how involved he was, how hands on he was with every aspect of her existence, I fell in love all over again.
To say he's a wonderful father is an understatement.

Family. Comes. First. He would do anything, for anyone.
He is an amazing man and I am very lucky to call him mine :)

To all the dad's out there that stepped up to the plate time and time again for their children, have a relaxing and wonderful day!

If someone were to ask me what religion I am, I wouldn't know how to answer.
As a child I went to an Episcopalian grade school.
After high school I attended a Catholic University.
I wasn't baptized until I was ten, because my parents felt religion is a personal choice and didn't want to sway my decision.

As a wedding photographer I have attended a number of different religious ceremonies and have mixed emotions about all of them.
But I don't like to discriminate. Life is too hard as it is. If people have certain beliefs, that's their right. Who am I to judge?

One thing I do know?

When the sounds of life become muted, as I rock my baby girl to sleep and her fat little cheek rests on my shoulder, and her breathing starts to get heavy, I KNOW there is some sort of a Higher Power.
I know this tiny little creation that has brought such immense joy and new found love into my life can't possibly be happenstance.
Her presence has made me look at life and the world through different eyes.
I now look through the eyes, of a mother.

And I get it now.
I get why my grandmother was so over protective when I was going on a trip.
I understand why my mom will drop almost anything to go on a spontaneous walk with me.

There is NOTHING like it. That deep in your soul, feel like you're gonna burst at the seams with love feeling only a mother knows.

I finally get it now.

Delaney is now 10 months old.
She said her first word: "Dada".
She loves mangoes and despises avacadoes.
She does the army crawl across our living room.
She has a horrible temper and yet the most infectious smile I've ever seen.

Women constantly tell me to enjoy every minute of this time with my daughter because it goes by at lightning speed.
Oh I so am- savoring every single second of it.

I wish a very Happy Mama's Day to all the woman who have the hardest, yet most rewarding job I can imagine.

I met Sylvia, the mother of the bride, when my husband and I were first dating. We talked at a dinner party for hours. She told me how her daughter, Kathy, was at Columbia University on a full ride academic scholarship. She was living in New York City experiencing the life I'd always wanted, and I was super jealous.

It had always been a dream of mine to move to Manhattan, live in a quaint apartment, grocery shop at the local deli, take morning walks in Central Park, listen to live jazz at The Blue Note and discover the city by walking everywhere.

After doing some serious research on apartment rental prices, my dream quickly shattered. So as Sylvia chatted about going to visit her and how beautiful the winters were, I lived vicariously through both of them.

Before I met Kathy, I imagined her to be quite reserved, somewhat serious and a bit of a Plain Jane. Oh how wrong I was.

Not only does she have a vivacious personality, but she's also drop dead gorgeous. And sweet. And funny. And loyal. And smart. Quite the package.

I met first met Jonathan at our engagement session. The entire 45 minute drive to our location, Kathy and I talked about every little detail of their wedding. (Not the most interesting conversation for a man), but he patiently listened (or at least pretended to).

I'm a huge fan of props for e-sessions so when Kathy told me she brought a bistro set, vintage luggage and dominoes to incorporate in our shoot, my creative juices started flowin'!

Jonathan, again, patiently unpacked the car, set up and re-set up the props without one complaint. He just followed us around, warmly smiling with those perfect teeth of his, and posed, sat, stood, leaned, hugged and kissed Kathy all on cue.

They exude such great respect and love for each other and I feel so lucky they asked me to photograph their wedding.

On their special day the weather couldn't have been more perfect and Kathy and Jonathan couldn't have looked more amazing. As they danced to their wedding song, "Para tu Amor" by Juanes, I smiled from ear to ear.

You can't fake happiness. You can't fake chemistry. I've attended and photographed enough weddings to know when two people are truly in love. I know Kathy and Jonathan are a perfect match.

Congratulations to a wonderful couple- have a blast on your honeymoon in Puerto Rico!

If I've said it once, I'll say it again. I LOVE taking maternity shoots. Although some women are hesitant at first, I've never had a client that regretted it.

Beth and Ruben are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their son who is due next month. The nursery is getting the final touches and the new parents are a bit nervous as to what their future has in store.

The best advice I can give them is to roll with the punches. No matter how many books you've read or baby blankets you've collected, you can never be prepared enough.

I'm so happy to have done this session with Ruben and Beth and cannot wait to meet Baby Cruz!

Since the baby's room is a beach theme, I thought it would be sweet for Ruben and Beth to collect a rock and put it in his room to always remember the day they took their maternity shoot.

As I drove along Pacific Coast Highway on my way to this wedding, I thought of how lucky I am to live in Southern California.

Los Angeles has so many great places to get married, but I have to say, Malibu takes the cake- no pun intended :)

The perfect temperature, amazing view of the ocean and relaxed feel in the air.

Joanne and Chris could not have picked a better day. A better place. Especially a better mate for each other.

The ceremony was heartfelt and special. The vows were personal and from the heart. And the reception was an absolute blast. People danced for hours and the wedding didn't wind down until well after midnight.

The Johnson's have two daughters. Lucy is just three weeks old. Emma is 3 1/2, and loves to draw. She introduced herself by handing me a picture she made for me just before I arrived. What a way to melt my heart!

We did this family session in their home. The lighting was streaming through the windows and made for beautiful shots. I wanted to photograph a bit of their everyday routine, and I hope it was captured well. It was so special for me to be able to capture the family with their new addition Ms. Lucy!

They were friends in college. Both very involved in school activities. Both very passionate about the importance of continuing education and sharing that passion with high school students. Both in other relationships at the time. One thing led to another and each of their relationships came to an end.

Jonathon asked Kathy out to lunch. Then again. And again. Kathy was completely oblivious to the fact this may blossom into something more than just friends.
Now, a year later and just a few months from their wedding, it all seemed so clear looking back. They had so much in common. Their love for dogs, I Love Lucy reruns and playing dominoes. The fact family and loyalty are so important to both of them.

Kathy claims she is an old soul, so what better place to do their engagement session than The San Gabriel Mission. What an AMAZING place to shoot. Beautiful architecture. Amazing lighting. Tons of opportunities. Throw in a gorgeous couple and my job that day was pretty easy!

Congratulations Kathy and Jonathon! Now it's countdown to the BIG DAY!

old friends are forever friends.

I remember when I was a Brownie, (the pre-group to Girl Scouts), we used to sing a song with the words, "Make new friends, but keep the old ones... one is silver, and the other is gold."

Oh how very true. Old friends are like a cozy pair of sweat pants. So comfortable and familiar. These are the people you confide in when you need someone to listen without judgment, but be put in your place when needed most. The ones you ditched school with together and vacationed Spring Breaks with. The friends that knew you before you were a wife or a mother and before you had to be all adult-like and responsible. Ugh.

This was my first professional shoot where a client asked if I would do a session with four best friends. The minute Phyllis asked I was so excited! We all put pressure on getting that annual "family shot", but what about taking some time to do a shoot with the people you confide in the most?

Phyllis, Ronda, Laurel and Corine have known each other for over 25 years. Watching them interact was such a kick! They were so raw, honest and fun with each other.

We decided to shoot the session at Cabrillo Beach. The sunset was AMAZING that night and we had the whole beach to ourselves.

My best friend Kate is having a baby. She's scheduled for a C-section. TODAY. We don't know what the sex is yet. The anticipation is killing me. In just a few hours I'll know and I'm dyyyyying to find out.

We did this maternity shoot a couple weeks ago. She was in her last week, of her last trimester, and of course feeling irritable, tired and huge. Ya sure. She's real HUGE.
I'll admit, I kinda talked her into doing the session. Because although she felt awful, and "huge", I saw how beautiful she was. I wanted to capture this last chance of her big round belly, her glowy, perfect skin and annoyingly shiny hair. It didn't hurt that the session would boost my portfolio considerably.

I LOVE doing maternity shoots. The idea that there is another LIFE in that belly. Just waiting to come and join our crazy world. It's such an amazing time in a woman's life. Because most pregnant woman don't feel sexy (I know I sure didn't), when they're pregnant, I strive to bring out that sensuality. To show them how incredibly beautiful they really are. By seeing this session, how can you deny it? Beauty. Glow. Sensuality. Times ten.

I'll be honest. I'm selfishly hoping Kate has a girl so our daughters can grow up together and possibly have the same bond we do. But if this baby is a boy, that's ok too. Because then Delaney and him can get married and then we'll be in-laws. ;)

I told Jack to look up at his mom. He said, "But I can't see her!" It was hilarious!

Kate really wanted to get shots of her and Jack because of the huge focus everyone would have on the baby soon. I adore the connection these two have together. It's so beautiful.

The picture on the left was taken two years ago when Kate was pregnant with Jack. I tried to recreate the same shot this time with the picture on the right. Although this time I shot her farther along in her pregnancy so she's quite bigger. Besides that she looks the same!

When Megha called me inquiring about getting a maternity shoot done, she was a bit apprehensive. She was at the tail end of her pregnancy, and feeling pretty uncomfortable.

I told her I felt the exact same way just before my baby girl was born. I also explained, despite how awful I felt I ended up doing my own maternity shoot and now am SO happy I did.

Even if the pictures are just for my husband and me, it was worth every minute. When I look back at my photos, I smile- remembering what it was like to FEEL a baby growing inside me. Remembering how extra nice people were, holding the door open, or helping with groceries. For just a minute I forget the lack of sleep, heartburn and back pain.

Luckily, my story sold her. The day of our shoot, the weather was gorgeous. The lighting at sunset was buttery and perfect. There was a calming in the air and the beach was quiet at the days end. For a short time that evening, this little family of three enjoyed one last time together on the beach. Just a few days later, Megha gave birth to a baby girl.

Well hello again! Did ya miss me? I've been on a bit of a baby-havin' sabbatical. Since I last blogged we've added an addition to the family. I am now a proud mama to a precious baby girl. Ms. Delaney East is now three months old and melts my heart every time her gummy little smile shines my way.

While I was pregnant, a lovely British couple contacted me about photographing their wedding. It was a very special wedding to me. It would be the first wedding I shot after I had my baby.

While on vacation in California last year, they visited Manhattan Beach and simply fell in love. They promised when they wed, they would have the ceremony at The Shade Hotel. It was a lovely, intimate affair with thirty of their closest family and friends.

The morning of their event, I was nervous and excited at the same time. I had been so wrapped up in mommyhood for the past few months, that I was worried I'd be a little "rusty" when it came to shooting a wedding.

The second I met Joanne and Jon, I was immediately at ease. They were so sweet and relaxed. They're the kind of couple that exudes such warmth that you feel their love for each other instantly- a dream couple for a photographer!

Congratulations to Joanne and Jon! I can't wait to visit you in London someday!

new mom must have's:

I'm not gonna lie. I've tried to get a blog post with a bunch of pictures of our newest addition, Ms. Delaney East up for a while now. First I tried to have it done by the time my baby girl turned two weeks. Ya, didn't happen. Then I settled for her one month birthday. That didn't pan out either. Now, after much frustration and a couple moms telling me (actually laughing at me for my naive way of thinking) to relax and let it go, I've stopped stressing. But that's what I'm learning. Having a baby changes priorities SO MUCH. My idea of what to do in my "free time" is completely different. It actually feels like a ticking time bomb about to go off until the next time she: wakes from a nap, needs to feed or get a diaper changed.

So let's just say, my post will be up, as soon as I can get it up. For now, I'm focusing on my new little love. Like the fact that she smiled at me for the first time yesterday. My heart melted into a million sappy pieces!

I've officially been a parent now for 34 days and in this short time I've figured out a few things that help my days go a bit smoother. I've included a list of the "MUST HAVE'S" for a rookie mom:

For bath time:
THE STAY DRY BATH APRON
This terrycloth apron is AMAZING and is a huge asset when bathing your little one. If the baby splashes water, your clothes don't get wet. When you're trying to get the baby out of the bath, it eliminates her from slipping out of your arms. After bath time is over, I scoop my baby up and wrap her in the apron to keep her warm and cozy while drying her off. The velcro around the neck and tie around the waist are super easy to release one-handed. It also comes with a terrycloth mitten for easy washing. I can't imagine using a regular towel after I have used this product.

For breastfeeding:
MY BREST FRIEND
Many women have suggested the "Boppy" pillow, but in my opinion, the Brest Friend is WAY better. It's a "shelf-like pillow" that you lay your baby on while feeding. It has a velcro strap that wraps around your back and keeps it in place. The machine washable cover is easy to zip off for washing (in case of milk leakage or spitting up). I can't imagine using a pillow or holding my baby up to my breast the whole time during feeding. This thing is a MUST HAVE.

For watching your little one:
THE SUMMER VIDEO MONITOR
Some parents think this is a little ridiculous, claiming the monitors without a camera are suffice. I couldn't disagree more. I have mine next to me as I write this! If she cries, I can look over and see if she's just being fussy, or if she really needs me. I use it all the time. The camera can be moved around very easily and is small and lightweight and the portable monitor is the size of a cell phone. It's especially great if you live in a two story house. If your baby is napping in her room, who wants to walk up a bunch of stairs to check on your baby every time you hear a cry? That alone is way worth the couple hundred bucks it costs.

For sleeping:
The best swaddler, in my opinion is the SWADDLE ME by Kiddopotamus
When I first went to register, my sister tried to convince me to get some. I said no because I didn't like the picture on the front of the packaging- Lol. It shows a baby in a straitjacket type swaddle with the baby's head popping out the top. It freaked me out. Once I was home and read all the fabulous reviews, I gave in and added it to my registry. I am so glad I did. I had no idea the significance of "swaddling" before I had a baby. I tried to wrap her like a tight burrito with tons of other types of blankets, but SWADDLE ME is the only one she can't wiggle out of.

To soothe:
THE SOOTHIE PACIFIER
This pacifier was the one they gave me in the hospital. She latched onto it right away. I came home and tried to use other pacifiers and she immediately spit them out. I went and got a few more SOOTHIE PACIFIERS and she loves them. I use it to calm her, in between feedings and it helps IMMENSELY. It's crazy how babies can tell the difference in a pacifier but trust me, they can.

To cover:
MUSLIN WRAPS are ideal for so many reasons. They are made of cozy, stretch cotton material and are super soft and airy. They're ultimately used to swaddle, but my daughter always wiggles out of it, no matter how tightly I wrap her. I do love them for wrapping her in while I'm rocking her and especially to cover her stroller when we're out and about. I also tuck it around her when she's in her car seat and I feel it gives her a sense of security and comfort.

To track feedings:
THE BABY TRACKER is a record book for your baby's daily routines of feeding, napping and changing. I've come to understand the difficulty of remembering all that happens in a day and this book has been my savior. Sure, you can jot this info down in your own notebook, but this type of organization is totally worth it to me. I can look back at days and analyze why she may have been fussy, etc.. There's space on each page for personal notes as well so I write down what I've eaten that day and monitor whether or not it affects her disposition.

To clean up:
I am a huge fan of BURP CLOTHS. I got a bunch for my shower and use them for everything. I have them all over my house- on my nightstand in case she spits up, I use them over the changing pad in case of leakage, I have a couple in my diaper bag in case of spills. They're great!

To make changing easier:
I also love ZIP UP ONESIES. My friend suggested these for nighttime and I couldn't agree more. At three in the morning the last thing I feel like doing is properly snapping twenty buttons back together after a changing. ZIP UP ONESIES are simple and quick.

To capture memories:
A VIDEO CAMCORDER-
Right before I gave birth I did much research and chose the CANON VIXIA HIGH DEF CAMCORDER and I couldn't be more pleased. It's small, lightweight and captures great video. It also takes still pictures. I have a small point and shoot that also takes video but the quality is decent at best. The investment of a decent camcorder is priceless in my opinion.

Please feel free to comment and add any other ideas you may have... I need all the help I can get!

Many people don't realize how physical taking pictures of little kids is- unless of course you have some of your own. Then you understand to get that perfect shot, you probably sweat quite a bit in the process! You run around and follow them, hoping they will stay curious with something for more than a nanosecond so you can capture that picturesque moment.

When I do family sessions, not only do I take the pictures, I have to entertain the kids at the same time. Props help. Singing nursery rhymes sometimes works. Mom or Dad makes them laugh and look. But when the parents are included in the shot, I have to improvise. Especially now, with my beach ball of a belly constantly reminding me that leaning down and getting up are a far greater task nowadays.

That's when I had to bite the bullet. I asked my sister if she could assist me with the Medina family shoot last weekend. I needed her to make the baby giggle. Look towards the camera. Carry my bag and reflector. And most importantly, help me back up when I'm on the ground trying to shoot from the child's point of view.

The Medina family was SO easy to shoot. When Yvette asked if I would do a session with her family she left all the planning up to me. It was awesome! I chose a nature setting because that's the type of people the Medina's are- relaxed, chill and easy going.

Besides the fact that their son Christian is absolutely ADORABLE (Those lips! Those eyes! I was in love!), he was super easy to photograph. No crying, no fussiness. We wandered the park and I captured shots of their beautiful family of three. Loving each other. Enjoying the gorgeous day. It was perfect.

TYSON: I can't get enough of this little guy. His sun-kissed curls. Those fat lips. His golden skin. Those big brown eyes that melt my heart. I just wanna lay my face in his head of fluffiness and take a little nap.

I've been doing photo shoots with Tyson since he came into this world two years ago. It's crazy how time FLIES. How quickly newborns become babies and babies become toddlers. The next thing I know, he'll be going to school and push me away when I try and give him kisses in public.

His mom Donna and I have been friends since junior high. Now over two decades later, (YIKES!), instead of talking about boys and bus passes to the beach, we talk about diaper choices and day care.

After I got some shots of Ty alone, I asked Donna to be in some of the pictures with him. The candid interaction between a child and his mother is so beautiful. I loved watching them laugh and sing. It's what I look forward to most about becoming a mom. The little things. Those moments you wouldn't trade for the world.

You know those girls that are so naturally beautiful you instantly wanna hate 'em? Maybe they'll be snobby or mean so it'll make it easier, but then come to find out they're genuinely nice so you can't?

This is how I feel about the Evanow sisters. Lauren and Ellen are annoyingly beautiful. They're tall and slender, with cute freckles and great skin. They have hair that should be in shampoo commercials and teeth that would make any orthodontist very proud.

Ellen is graduating from high school this year and wanted me to take her senior portraits. Lauren has decided to give modeling a chance and needed some head shots.

Both girls were accepted into UCLA in the fall and I can only imagine all those frat boys falling head over heels in love with these two.

As I went through all the pictures it was SO hard to decide on just a few for my blog.

A few days ago I did a twin newborn shoot with one of my favorite couples. Danell and I have been dear friends for two decades, and I've known her husband Frank since high school. Our babies will only be a few months apart and when I told Danell I was expecting too, she screamed at the top of her lungs. It was a moment I'll never forget- she was so excited for us.

I'm so happy we're on this roller coaster ride together, clueless half the time, so vulnerable to what's in store as we enter this new chapter in our lives. If I ask her newborn questions she always responds with, "How should I know? I'm only a couple months ahead of you!"

This shoot was more like a documentary than a photo session. I spent a majority of the day with them, watching their daily routine, while taking pictures in between.

As I was going through the images the next day, my eyes began to well up, and the tears started coming. And coming. And wouldn't stop. (please see my LAST POST to explain my extreme sensitivity these days).

Just a couple months ago these little miracles were in my friend's tummy, as we rambled on about how much things are going to change for us soon. Now as I witness her life, I see a reflection of how mine will be in such a short time.

I watched and admired as she and Frank looked at those babies like they were the only things in the world that mattered. Their priorities have changed. The laundry can wait. The dishes can sit. Staring into their beautiful daughter's eyes and showering them with love takes absolute precedent. I can't wait. I've never liked doing dishes anyway. Now I have a good excuse.

the home stretch.

I've got a lot on my plate. I have for the past year: I planned a wedding, got married, went on an incredible honeymoon, got pregnant, moved into a new house and am now at the home stretch of my pregnancy and about to slide into motherhood.
On top of all that, I'm still trying to run my photography business and finish the final touches of my new website.
It's been hectic to say the least, and it doesn't help much that my hormones are ON FIRE right now. Oh joy.
Every woman understands my rants, but every woman who's been pregnant REALLY gets it.
Yes, I'm the girl that cries for absolutely no reason at all. I'm the girl that's in the shower and the tears start to flow and I have no idea why, and I'm so happy I'm in the shower because I can cry, in private, and when I get out and my husband asks if I'm ok, at least I can pretend it's not tears, but just water on my face from showering. Ya, I'm pregnant alright.
My husband thinks I'm a nut. I can totally see his point. But he's never had a baby growing in his tummy before so he soooo doesn't get it.
Between getting up too pee five or six or seven times a night, I CAN'T SLEEP. Because I'm thinking about burpies and binkies and babies and giving birth. I'm worrying about my water breaking and labor pains and what to pack for the hospital and how I'm gonna be as a new mommy.
All this is rushing through my head as my husband is peacefully snoozing next to me and I'm jealous. Jealous that he sleeps more than an hour at a time and jealous that his bladder is bigger than mine. I'm jealous he gets to be the hand holder during birth instead of physically pushing this baby out.
I'm excited and scared. Anxious and nervous. Hormonal and moody. But I'm also very very blessed. I have amazingly supportive family and friends. They're already fighting over who gets to babysit this little monkey once it's arrived.
Ok, I'll get back to work now... I just needed to vent.

I've never been categorized as "small". Much to my disappointment, I've never been one of those girls that could eat whatever I wanted. I was always in the back row during group pictures and have been 5' 9" since I was 14 years old. I come from a long line of tall ancestors and after years of trying to slouch and wear ugly flats, I've learned to accept it.
Although I've tried my best to get over my awkward teenage insecurity, when I'm around girls that are naturally thin and adorable, I admit, I still fantasize about what it would be like to eat a cheeseburger and not think twice about it.

I had a maternity shoot with one of the cutest preggo chicks EVER.
Rosa is "that girl". She's the girl that you can't tell is pregnant until she turns around. She's the girl that still fit in her cute pre-pregnancy jeans until her last trimester. But the most annoying thing about her is she's REALLY nice. And sweet. And funny. And down to earth. And we hit it off right away.

She was a bit hesitant on doing a pregnancy shoot (as most women are...), but I promised I'd make her look like a smokin' soon-to-be hot mama, so she decided to give me a chance.
Usually maternity shoots last about 90 minutes. I shot Rosa for almost three hours! We were so caught up in preggo talk, time simply flew by.
Rosa and her husband, Scott are due next month and Im so excited to meet their new baby!

Kelly and I have been friends for over a decade. I've seen her grow from a shy teenager into a beautiful young woman.

Both of us love to talk. About anything. She's one of those friends who I can talk to for HOURS. In fact, we do. A lot. Last year we drove together to Vegas for WPPI, and I don't think we listened to music, or kept quiet the entire drive.

She and I both have a deep love affair with photography. A few years back, we discovered this was our true passion and decided to move forward and pursue photography as a career choice and not just a hobby. We work together quite a bit, and second shoot for one another at weddings. We've learned and grown so much in the past few years and I'm so lucky to call her one of my dearest friends.

In a couple months she's tying the knot to her longtime love, Ivo. I'm so excited to finally see them marry. When I was planning my wedding last year she was so helpful through it all. Now it's time for me to return the favor.

Last Sunday Kelly had her bridal shower. Margarita's and Mexican food were served while guests cozied up in a friend's living room to laugh, reminisce and watch her open gifts. The delicious desserts family and friends brought were too pretty not to take pictures of so I've included a few.

Congrats Kel! 46 more days and counting! I can't wait!

Kelly took pictures of gifts people had sent prior to the shower and thanked everyone by posting the pictures on a board- it was so cute.

Originally the party was supposed to take place in the backyard but because of the rain, we had it inside.

Molly, her best friend since they were in diapers, threw the shower for her.

I know people say when it rains on your wedding day it's supposed to be good luck, but I'm not too sure I believe that. What bride doesn't want perfect weather that's going to keep her make up and hair in tact, her wedding dress dry and her flowers to stop from wilting?
On Sunday morning, before I was shooting Cristina and James' wedding I peeked out the window and smiled a big sigh of relief. Clear blue skies and not a gray cloud in sight. Yahoo! Happy bride= happy photographer.
The ceremony took place at the Wayfarer's Chapel in Palos Verdes. The grounds are breathtaking and the church itself is magical inside, with glass walls and trees surrounding. It was special for me to shoot there because my parents got married at the very same spot over forty years ago.
Cristina was one of the most relaxed brides I've ever dealt with. I asked her if she was nervous and she said, "No, not at all... I'm excited." She and James have been together for almost a decade so I think she was pretty confident in her decision to marry him.
After vows were exchanged, we drove along the Palos Verdes coast to get some shots of the bridal party by the ocean.
The reception took place at the Doubletree Hotel in San Pedro. As guests arrived, cocktails were enjoyed across from the marina as the sun was setting. The rest of the reception took place upstairs in the ballroom, with the centerpieces being gorgeous orchids and the accent color a warm raspberry.
Cristina and James played their own version of the "Newlywed Game" which was quite the entertainment for their guests. One thing I noticed about this couple is how much fun they have together. They were laughing and enjoying each other all night.
Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Pruchyanimit. Enjoy your honeymoon in Tahiti!

caramel & cravings.

I'm not a chocolate lover. I know, I'm a total weirdo and I realize that. I think it's deelish and I wouldn't deny a nice piece of dark chocolate, but it's not my sweet tooth preference.
I'm a caramel craver. I LOVE IT. Butterscotch is a high contender too. That mix of brown sugary sweetness mixed with a hint of salty satisfaction is my idea of HEAVEN.
I try not to indulge in Starbucks as much as I'd like either. It's the whole corporate "way overpriced cup o' joe that I can make at home with a little effort" that I try and rebel against. Don't get me wrong- I love Starbuck's- but if I think about how much a habit can cost on a daily basis, I'd rather splurge on a nice weekend getaway in the desert.
When I was running errands yesterday, I decided to treat myself to a Caramel Macchiato. As I was waiting at the counter, I saw they were selling THE caramel sauce that I love- that I absolutely can eat by the spoonful. I was delighted! So I bought it, and this morning I made my own version of a Caramel Mac. It didn't look as pretty as the one I had yesterday, but it was still pretty darn good.

Two years ago today my third nephew was born. He was big and mighty from the moment he came into this world. His name is Cole, but I call him Coco Butter. His skin color is silky and soft and golden, like he just got back from a summer in Hawaii. He's a mischievous little guy and we always joke he's gonna be the friend that cajoles you into throwing the water balloon out the window or cons you into skipping school. His smile lights up the darkest of days and when I walk into the room and he yells, "Hi Tee Teeeeeee!!!!!!!!" I forget about bills, bad days and stress. I just wanna eat up his fat cheeks.

Kids have a mind of their own. We all know that. As I've stated before, when I shoot kids, they (literally) run the show. I follow them around like teeny boppers discovering the Jonas Brothers. When you see small children in portraits staring straight at the camera with a big Kool-Aid smile, please note- that one great shot probably had 30 not-so-great shots before and after it. God bless digital cameras.
Little Nate was adorable. I loved his colorful sweater and his beaming smile. He was spunky and curious and wanted to seek and find everything he could get his little hands on. I ran around him trying to capture every expression he presented to the camera. It was a bit of a challenge, but at least I got my exercise for the day!

Saturday I photographed a birthday party and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. Just when I get used to grabbing a coat before I walk out the door, Mother Nature plays a trick, opening up the blue, cloudless skies and letting Ms. Sun brightly shine through.
Ms. Ava turned 3 years old and in honor of Valentine's Day, the theme was all about love and hearts and sweetness. This little angel adores puppets and pink and the party was filled with all the things she loves.
The backyard is HUGE and had enough room for a couple bouncies, a baseball game and a hot dog stand.
It was a perfect way to spend such a lovely day.

I love the rain don't get me wrong. It's the closest thing to winter that we get here in sunny Cali. The sound of the thunder and rain makes me feel all "Seattle-like" and I bust out my scarves, crank up the heat, and Scott makes a fire.
But as I walked into my garage yesterday, I spotted the most beautiful beginning bloom from our peach tree. The tree was still wet from last night's downpour, but the daintiest of white flowers were beginning to sprout. Although we've got a while until Spring plops itself on our doorsteps, it immediately made me smile and internally cry, "Photo Opp!"
The bloom represented not just the beginning changes of the season, but also the beginning of a new chapter in my life.
I'm starting to get a nice little baby bump, much to the disagreement of many of my family and friends. Talk to my old jeans about it. They'll vouch for me that we don't fit anymore. I feel the little pepper moving around, or at least tapping me a little, as if to say, "Hey you- I'm in here! Just a little reminder!"
I'm starting to go through decor magazines and get internet ideas for the baby's room. It's all becoming more and more clear. The morning sickness has subsided, and I feel pretty good!

cristina & james: los angeles engagement session

Cristina and James wanted to shoot their engagement session by the water. How can you blame them when San Pedro has such breathtaking spots? It was CHILLY that Sunday afternoon, but so beautiful. The crisp air made for gorgeous blue skies, and the past weeks rain washed away the smog layer that can ruin the most amazing of So Cal sunsets.

These guys were such troopers. We took shots at three different locations and although Cristina had on a strapless dress, she happily posed for me in between teeth chattering.

What I admire so much about Cristina and James' relationship is the great thoughtfulness they have for one another. Everytime we discuss their wedding plans, whether it be in person or over the phone, they are both completely involved. It's so nice to see a man just as involved in their wedding as the bride is.

Although these two have been together for a number of years now, it felt as if they were still just as in love as the day they met. Can't you tell in these shots?

SEG Law Event

I flew out to Dallas, (morning sickness and planes are a GREAT combination), to shoot an event for a law firm. If you envision this type of affair being a bit stiff, think again! These peeps know how to have a good time!
It was held at the South Side on Lamar, an old abandoned train station which they decorated in a New York, gangster theme. The ultra entertaining and talented KC Campbell DJ'd the event, even enticing the biggest of wallflowers to rock out on the dance floor.
The guests were welcomed by a three piece jazz ensemble and were offered to have their pictures drawn from a character artist. A street vendor served up hot dogs with all the fixin's, as servers clad in 1920's attire served martinis and appetizers.
After cocktail hour, guests were ushered downstairs to a blue and pink softly-lit lounge. There were dance contests, a surprise proposal and lots of laughter. Guests cut the rug and seemed to be having no problem letting loose.

ringin' in the new year.

New Year's Eve is the day I always tend to reflect on the past year's events and think about about all I have accomplished, learned and loved.
2009 was quite a milestone year for me.

In February, we traveled to Canada and I experienced the true meaning of winter wonderland.

In May I got engaged and was proposed to in the sweetest, most heart-warming way.

In October I married my heart's desire.

Soon after we traveled to Thailand for our honeymoon and had the most amazing trip, falling deeply in love with the country and their people.

Now, as the year comes to a close, I'm proud to announce, Scott and I are expecting a baby!

Through all of my personal feats, I have had the opportunity to shoot tons of clients, some new, some old, and expand my business even more. I'm so lucky to have the job I do. I challenge myself creatively on a daily basis, I meet new people that let me shoot them at their most special and personal moments in their lives, and most importantly I learn and grow every single day.
As 2009 comes to an end, I thank you blog followers for taking the time out of your busy lives to give me a few minutes of your time and read my little posts.

I can't wait for what this year has in store for me. Hopefully lots of laughs, great prosper, good health and a VERY easy labor!

I love the holidays. I love that I have the opportunity to shoot family portraits and do cards for my clients. I love it even more when I have repeat clients . It's so fun to see that newborn that could barely open her eyes last year, now walk and giggle. Or the preteen that's now way too cool to put her arm around her brother for the family photo.

What I don't like about this time of year is having to WAIT. Wait for clients to send their cards and give me the go ahead that I can finally post them on my blog.

That time has finally arrived! The following cards are from my clients this year. I will do my post in two parts, so as not to overload you with all the sparkly smiles and pretty people.

Every photographer has their own tricks of the trade to get the shots they want. I hate to break it to you folks, but those "candids" you love so much, sometimes aren't so candid.

When I'm working with boys, the inevitable chat about obscene bodily functions usually works pretty well. With girls, it's great to get the giggles out with secrets or funny faces.

If the parents are willing, I'll ask them to get as close to my lens as possible and make a funny face or talk about something that they laughed about lately.

The more I work with my clients, the easier we connect and I know what makes them smile, or how to be serious.

I've shot Emilie and Sophia numerous times and they are so cute together. They are very close sisters and love to play games, dance and laugh. When I first met them, Sophia was very shy and reserved. Now she goofs around and feels very comfortable working with me. I asked the girls to tell a secret to one another. I have no idea what was said, but whatever it was, set the perfect precedent for the days shoot.

I've got about fifty blog posts to reveal, but I have to wait until my client's holiday cards go out before I can post the blogs. Janelle sent hers already, so she gave me the go ahead!

The Inez family are some of my very favorite clients. I'm privileged to say this is one of many shoots that I have done with them. Janelle and Ty appreciate photography and know how quickly kids grow up so they seize the moment when they can to have me shoot their family. They are used to me, so I can get them to be themselves a lot easier. They are also so sweet about telling me how much they love my photography. Who doesn't like a little pat on the back once in a while?

As their oldest son Jake grows up, I can't get over the resemblance he has to his dad. I wanted to get some shots of just the two of them because I think it's so cool to see the father/son silhouettes and how much they look alike. I would of had a huge school-girl crush on Jake if I went to high school with him. He is so cute!

Ty is an avid surfer, Jake is an amazing skater, so what better place to shoot them but at the beach? It was a bit chilly that day but it made for cuter pictures when lil' Gavin had to put on his camouflage hoodie.

ace levi turns one.

I love it when I get repeat clients. It makes me feel so good- like when you'd get a sticker on your spelling test in grade school. I want to be my client's lifelong photographer, kinda like a doctor or a hairstylist.

Maria and Dusty have a baby boy, Ace that just turned one. I have known him before he even came into the world, because I did a session with his mama when she was about nine and a half months prego!

The party was a cowboy theme and they spared no detail. There were pony rides, and a cowboy face painter, a balloon artist and a backyard style BBQ, complete with ribs, roasted corn and baked beans. The cake was one of the cutest I've seen, with bandanas made from fondant, golden edible stars and chocolate horses.

Ace was passed around the party, surrounded by friends and relatives. Not a peep was made out of him. Except of course when the scary "cowboy clown" tried to take a picture with him. I would've done the same thing I think.

Happy 1st birthday Ace! I hope to capture many more of your memories in year's to come!

My maiden last name has always been an issue- DRAWBAUGH. It's been made fun of and mispronounced it's entire existence, going back many generations I'm sure.
My husband (GULP- still seems weird!), and I recently returned from our incredible, amazing, awesome, closest-thing-to paradise, honeymoon from Thailand. As we arrived at our first hotel, the lady at the front desk welcomed us with, "Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Harris."
Harris: Easy. Simple. Uncomplicated. How can you misspell or mispronounce it, even in Thailand? You can't! That's what I love about it! So from now on, I'm officially Mrs. Kathryn Colby Harris.

When I wanted to name my company, I took into consideration, I probably (hopefully), wouldn't always be single, so I hoped to ditch my maiden name asap. I have always loved my middle name, Colby. So that, my friends, is where Kathryn Colby was established. That's my name, and it's not changin'.

I apologize for the lack of blog posts the last few weeks, but I've been a busy, busy gal. I planned for a wedding, I got married and said my I do's, then went on a fabulous 17 day honeymoon. Now I'm back in action with about ten events, (including our honeymoon) I have yet to post. So check back frequently peeps. I'll be around a lot more from now on!

Below is a little teaser of my incredible wedding day. It was a ton of hard work, but well worth it in the end. A special shout-out to the uber-talented Lin and Jirsa Photograhy for shooting my wedding. I couldn't have asked for better photographers- unless, of course, I could have hired myself- hehe.

It was SCORCHING hot. As I drove to San Gabriel Valley to shoot Amy and Bryant's wedding my car thermostat read 121 degrees. No joke. I was dreading getting out of the car. I didn't want the bride and groom to see me melt in my all black-clad attire. But really, what was I worried about? I wasn't the one wearing a wedding gown with petticoats or a three piece suit.

Not one complaint was made from the two. The best part was, they couldn't have been happier. We shot hundreds of pictures of them. Maybe it was the fact they were drunk in love. They were husband and wife now and really, who cared about a little heat?

The bride/groom session was shot at the San Gabriel Mission and the architecture was incredible. The reception was held at The Empress House, with over 300 of their family and friends. As waiters brought out numerous courses for dinner, Ally had three wardrobe changes, and with each dress that was put on, she seemed more and more relaxed.

They played games, laughed, danced, and toasted. It was a beautiful evening- Congratulations Amy and Bryant!

Lately I've been dreaming of baby toes, sweet smelling newborn's and tiny little fingers. I'm not sure if it's my maternal instinct yelling at me to hurry up, or perhaps the fact that I've been shooting a lot of newborn's lately. Whatever the case may be, baby dreams are dancing in my head.

The Funicello's just added a new addition to their beautiful family of four, making it a fabulous five. Baby Rocco was born not even a month ago, and he is a little angel. He sleeps a lot, coo's a little, and cries even less. I went over to Giancarlo and Tina's house to shoot their new addition and ended up staying a nice part of the afternoon. I hung out with Siena, their daughter, while she showed me all her babydolls, and I laughed with Gianni, their oldest son, while he tried to take pictures of ME! A photographer in the making perhaps? A boy after my own heart!

Days like this are why I love my job. When client's ask that I shoot the session in their home it makes me feel special. How lucky am I to be able to photograph the interaction of families, in their most personal environment? Their house was beautifully decorated, with an amazing view and a park-like backyard for the kids to frolic freely.

Siena and Gianni were SO sweet with their new baby brother, smothering him with kisses over and over. This little guy better get used to a lot of affection, because I have a feeling he's gonna get tons of it!

Life gets so complicated sometimes. I feel the older I get the quicker time flies by. Every once in a while I stop myself from rushing through the routine of Life.

Work, wedding plan, sleep, eat. Sleep, wedding plan, eat, work.

In another week will I really remember that I did all my laundry last Tuesday, or that I checked off my whole "to-do" list? NOPE.

What I will remember is the first time my nephews and boyfriend's daughter had a lemonade stand. I'll remember them working diligently on perfecting their "FRESH SQUEEZED LEMONADE" sign, making sure to use the darkest Crayola crayon for the wording. Or that they squeezed each and every lemon in the pitcher. I will also remember the look in their eyes when their first customer walked up to buy some of their juice. Or that my nephew, Caiden thought it was "only fair" if we split the money four ways instead of three, so the little girl that lives across the street didn't feel left out.

It was a simple Saturday in August. My boyfriend turned on some music and played it out our front window. The neighbors were busy with weekend chores. People were walking their dogs. The kids started a lemonade stand. Eventually a water fight broke out.

I sat on the front steps of our house and took it all in. I had dirty laundry and dishes to do. But I could of cared less. All I wanted to do was relax, pretend I didn't have a care in the world, and feel like a kid again.

Often clients ask me where they should get their family shoot taken. My first idea is always, "How about your own house or backyard?"

Here are a few reasons:
First and foremost, it's special. It's personal. It's where you and your loved ones reside most of the time. It's nice to shoot in a yard where flowers were planted by you and your daughter. Or to shoot your baby on the bed where you have been cuddling him since the day he was born. Another significant reason is because it's comfortable to newborns. It's easily accessible for the baby to take a little nap in between shoots, or get fed.

Last week I did a shoot at the Funicello's. Walking into their house, my mouth widened from ear to ear. Every room was a fabulous setting for shoots! Christina does interior design and she is one talented mama!
The weather was great that day too. The mid-morning light was just perfect, shining through the sheer-curtained bedroom windows so sweetly.

Their daughter, Arianna is gorgeous. She has these big brown doe-like eyes that will crush boys hearts, I can guarantee it! She was such a sweet little thing, asking if I wanted to play cards with her, and loved being in pictures with her brother, Mariano. She's such a proud big sister, already protecting him. Mariano was a little bundle of joy, only a month old and precious as can be.

I spent quite a while at their home. We shot inside, outside, moved around some furniture. It was great- time flew by and I had no idea. Reasons like this are why I love my job so much. I love quietly observing through my lens and seeing families together. Especially this young family. Taking pictures of Christina and Mauricio with their children was so beautiful. Watching the love seep through their eyes.

I love art. Paintings. Photography. I even appreciate good landscaping. Anything creative is my friend. I feel it's someone's soul throwing their expression out there for all the world to see. I love it!

So along with loving to shoot photos of people, I also love to do make up. I guess you'd call me a "make up artist poser". I definitely don't have the schooling for it, but I LOVE to do it. I've been helping family and friends out since high school- proms, weddings, boudoir shoots.

When I was a teenager and became curious about make up, my mom taught me how to properly apply it. I remember vividly how she explained the reasoning behind shadowing, light application and color palettes. Did I mention my mom is an artist as well? She's an illustrator- I guess I may have inherited a bit of her genes?

Without trying to sound too corny, I believe the face is a palette of it's own and I love to shadow the eyes, emphasizing their shape, or line the lips, emphasizing their pout.

But my favorite thing about doing make up is when the woman takes her first glimpse in the mirror and squeals in excitement about how beautiful she looks. Isn't that how we ALL want to feel?

This morning I did make up for two friend's of mine that are bridesmaid's in a wedding today- here's a few shots of how fantabulous they looked!

Although I'm getting married in a few months, I still don't FEEL like a bride. I never dreamed of the poofy, white, Cinderella-style wedding gown when I was a little girl. I never wanted a million people in my bridal party. I never imagined a huge wedding with elaborate floral centerpieces or a five-tier wedding cake.

So I guess when my family asked what I wanted to do for my bridal shower, my answer didn't surprise them. I said, "I just want a fun, relaxing evening with the closest women in my life- no brunch, no restaurant banquet room, and absolutely NO BRIDAL GAMES." I think I may have added a please at the end...

This past weekend I was thrown the most FABULOUS "non-bridal showery" shower, ever. The theme was "bollywood chic", incorporating everything about the Indian culture that I adore. Not one detail was spared.

The celebration was held in my soon-to-be mother in law's backyard, that has the most gorgeous jacaranda tree in the center. Lights were strung all through it, and lanterns hung from the branches.

As guests arrived, they were asked to choose a bindi and place the decorative gem on their forehead.

The food was catered from Red Fort Cuisine, and it was delicious! We ate plateful's of samosas, raita, pakora and naan. Women were jumping up for second's and you know that doesn't usually happen at a bridal shower!

The evening's signature cocktail was my favorite: a pomegranate martini, served in glasses that were HAND-Painted and gemmed by by my mom, and my future mom-in-law. They were SO CUTE!! Each guest got to take one home as a gift.

For dessert, my future sister-in-law, Jennifer made homemade vanilla ice cream, topped with fresh mango and shaved coconut.

Just after dinner a a belly dancer performed and taught us some native Indian dances.

My best friend Kate, and my mom put together gorgeous bright centerpieces, incorporating sliced oranges and my favorite flower: peonies!

As the night turned into a breezy 75 degrees, candles lit the scene, while laughter filled the air. I opened tons of beautiful gifts, as everyone ate, drank and relaxed.

My fee.on.say, Scotchy, surprised me after dinner with his own rendition of "bollywood chic". He wore nothing but a loin cloth, and his old Indian Guide vest that was about twenty sizes too small for him. It was hilarious!

I have to say- many people believe they have the best friends and family in the world. The honest truth is, I DO. I feel so blessed every day by what amazing people I am surrounded by.

I couldn't have asked for a more special evening.

When I thought about what type of entertainment I would have at my wedding, I always assumed it would be a DJ with a compilation of music I love. That is, until I heard the band DW3. I had gone out to dinner to The Chophouse and they were performing up on stage with some great vocals and jazz flair.

To say I was blown away from their first song was an understatement. The lead singer, Billy Mondragon, has such SOUL in his voice I could listen to him for hours- in fact I did! His brother, Eric, also sings and plays keyboard and his rendition of John Legend's "Ordinary People" gave me chills.

That evening they had a special guest saxophonist Rick Parma, straight from Chi-Town. He started playing his sax, walking around the restaurant, and that's when my sister whispered in my ear, "You HAVE to have them play at your wedding! They are UNBELIEVABLE!" I couldn't of agreed more. Each time I went to see them play, I fell in love with their style more and more.

What's so great about DW3, is their amazing versatility. They play everything from Latin Jazz, R & B, to Old School favorites like Stevie Wonder. My mom saw them play and loved them. My boyfriend saw them play and loved them. They are the type of band that EVERYONE wants to dance to.
They will be playing at my wedding and I CANNOT WAIT!

I photographed a party on Saturday that was held at the home of the DeGirolamo's. As I entered the backyard, I literally gasped in disbelief. I felt like I was walking into my own private resort. To say the house was breathtaking, was an understatement. The view alone, was worth a thousand words.

If I lived here, I would never leave. I would never eat out. I would sit on my patio, sip wine, barbecue, and watch the sunset, while my make-believe kids playfully swam in the pool.

The second I saw the invitation I knew this was gonna be a fabulous party. It was black, silver and flashy in all the right places. Johnny's wife Tina is known for creating fabulous invitations, and she certainly lived up to the expectation.

The mobster-themed party had casino tables, a cigar bar and amazing food compliments of Trusela Catering. Italian music played in the background, as clams casino were devoured. Cigar smoke filled the air as guests threw dice across the craps tables.

It was a perfect, balmy summer night in July. If only I brought my sleeping bag, I could of slept over on a lounge chair....

Welcome to my daily mental routine. Ms. Insomnia has been coming around WAY too often lately. I woke up this morning at 6:11 AM. Actually that's when I got UP. I woke up at 2:47, thought about the first half of my mental list, dozed back to sleep for a while, then awoke again at 4:49 to contemplate the rest of my list. I've pretty much accepted the fact that Ms. Insomnia is a big bully and I don't stand a chance.

I have a million and one things to do today, but in honor of summer, balance in my life and those picture perfect moments that I love to capture, I wanted to post a personal photo from this weekend.

My boyfriend and I had a slumber party on Friday with his daughter Katie, and my nephews Caiden and Jace. Boyfriend was not ready to get up yet on Saturday, so I let the little rug rats wake him in their own way. They pounced on top of him until he simply had no choice.

Happy Monday peeps. Happy Summer. Now I must begin my day- only a million more things to do now.

I love Indian customs. I love their deliciously spicy food, their henna artistry, and especially the gorgeous colors and fabrics of Indian clothing.

Traditionally, Indian weddings are a three day affair, starting with a Mehendi party. This is a pre-wedding ritual, usually celebrated at the bride's home. A henna artist applies Mehendi (henna tattoos), on the hands and feet of the bride and her guests.

The following day, a Grah Shanti ceremony is held in the morning, followed by an evening of traditional Indian dance. I had the opportunity of shooting the dancing and it was so cool!

An Indian band began to play, and the bride and groom, Nancy and Ravi started the customary dance. As the song progressed more and more people joined in, continuously moving in a circle. Not only is it a beautiful custom, but QUITE a work out! The circle gets larger and larger as more people join in, and the dancing gets faster.

It was such a neat evening to witness. It took everything out of me not to join in!

gavin turns one.

Gavin is having his very first birthday in a couple weeks, and what better way to celebrate than a photo shoot!

As I've mentioned before, when it comes to baby sessions, I simply follow them around with my camera and shoot away. I take my time, and try not to pose too many shots, because when confusion and frustration seep through their little heads, a smile or giggle is the last thing that will happen.

I'm sure they're thinking, "Why IS this lady with her BIG BLACK BOX following me around for?! All I wanna do is play in peace!"

With that being said, my session with Gavin went very smooth. He played with some toys, wiggled his lil toes in the grass and giggled uncontrollably when his daddy picked him up on his shoulders and ran around the yard.

Ty, his dad, wasn't really supposed to be in the shots, but I thought the interaction between the two was so freakin' cute I had to add them to my blog.

Next weekend is Gavin's big birthday bash. The theme is CANDYLAND! I can't wait to see the little bugger's reaction when he has sugar for the first time!

I've always expressed how much I love to travel. If I'm able to incorporate photography and travel, and able to write it off as work, I'm one happy gal! When I was asked to shoot a charity event in Dallas, of course my response was, "Yeeee haw! When do you need me to be there?"

The event was for the Trailblazer's, which is part of the Cattle Baron's Ball. For us Californian's, we're probably clueless as to what that is, but for Texan's it's a BIG DEAL. Cattle Baron's Ball is a wonderful charity that donates a substantial amount of time and money to the American Cancer Society. This year alone, they have raised over $3.5 million!

As part of thanking those that contribute so much, the Trailblazer's held a party at the Asian Crow Museum in downtown Dallas. Wynnwood Events collaborated the entire soiree and what an amazing job they did!

The theme was "East meets West", cultivating the western ideals of Texas and the eastern ideals of Asia. As guests arrived, they were greeted with cowboy and Chinese dragon stilt-walkers.

The event's signature cocktail was a refreshing concoction of Milagro silver tequila, agave nectar and lime juice. Servers passed beautifully displayed appetizers such as crab cakes with Fiji apples and ginger creme fraiche, and Korean short ribs with grilled pineapple and crushed cashews.

The guests relaxed, while listening to the sounds of country singer Derek Sholl .

Upon departure, guests were handed glowing Chinese lanterns, attached to bags of ginger candied pecans.

I cannot emphasize enough what a great impression the Wynnwood event planning team had on me. From the food, to the decor, to the impeccable service- every detail of the evening was exemplified in a creative, and professional manner. It was a beautiful, balmy night in Dallas and evident that everyone had a great time!

As I announced a few weeks ago, I'm tying the knot. Not only am I excited to move onto this next new chapter, but I'm trying my darnedest to enjoy the whole wedding planning process.

I guess you could say I'm an avid wedding-goer. I went to eight weddings last year alone, and probably over 100 in my lifetime.

What I love most at a wedding is the personal details the couple has incorporated into their day- that special song they chose to dance to, the montage of photos from their lives, the vows they wrote for each other. To me, it's what starting a life together is all about. Each person bringing in pieces of themselves to share. Their taste, their friends and family, their love.

Some women plan the entire day and their man just shows up to the ceremony, almost as clueless as the guests on how everything will look. Not my man! I'm constantly getting his feedback and including his ideas into the celebration. This is as much part of his day as it is mine.

Ever since I was a little girl, my idea of a wedding was a bit different than most of my friends. I never envisioned a huge wedding with tons of bridesmaids and a princess style wedding gown. I always imagined mine would be smaller, non-traditional and oozing with my own personal touches. I'm constantly surfing the web and thumbing through magazines noticing decorations and realizing, "I can make that- for a quarter of the price!"

As the weeks begin to run away I wanted to send out a save the date card. I was trying to think of a cute, original idea, and finally a light bulb popped into my head. I ran into my (soon-to-be) step-daughters room and fished out two of her Barbie dolls. I quickly drove out to Target to purchase the proper wedding attire for my lovely models, and called my friend Kelly to help with my big photo shoot.

So to answer some questions: Yes. I took this shot in my backyard. Yes I actually did go to the store and purchase the doll's attire. And yes, I designed the card. It was so much fun!

Today I'm going to register- wish me luck!

I've always loved intimate weddings. The soon-to-be "Mr. and Mrs. ______" seem to be a bit more relaxed and comfortable. Guests tend to be a bit more involved and everything feels a little more like what it should feel when you're at a wedding- LOTS and LOTS of love.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to shoot with fabulous photographer Kelly Melissa, for a beautiful, intimate wedding in the couple's own backyard. Because we spent the entire day with the newlyweds, we witnessed tons of people pitching in with prepping and setting up, while laughing and enjoying themselves without the slightest inclinations of nervousness or stress. It was such a magical day.

The bride Jamie, got ready in her room with her bridesmaids, laughing and relaxing with some wine. In my opinion, it's what your wedding day should feel like. She dressed in a GORGEOUS Diane Von Furstenberg gown, and had her hair done in an elegant french twist.

Todd, the groom, dressed in an adorable sear-sucker suit (say that five times fast!), and coordinated his outfit with all white old school slip-on Vans.

Jamie's son, Sam walked her down the aisle and a friend of the couple's was the officiant. Close friends stood up and read their favorite poem, as Todd and Jamie smiled from ear to ear. They then proceeded to say their vows, which they wrote themselves, while the crowd quietly wiped away tears as they listened.

It was truly a BEAUTIFUL day.

Jessie and Jason were married at the most amazing venue. Eucalyptus Lane was quite a task to navigate, but once I stepped foot onto the property, I felt like I was in a fairytale.

The ceremony was held in a breathtaking garden setting, and because they were wed in the peak of Springtime, flowers were in full bloom. The reception was in an abandoned barn that was refurbished into sheer wedding magic. Twinkly lights, chandeliers and tons of candles, gave it the most beautiful intimate feeling.

Every detail of the day was filled with perfection, from the gorgeous cherry blossom wedding cake, to the stunning eggplant colored bridesmaid dresses.

The venue, the couple, and the decor was a photographer's dream wedding to shoot. I was so honored to be such a special part of Jessie and Jason's big day.

I've kissed some frogs. I've dated even more toads. But I think if I hadn't I wouldn't know what a "non-slimy frog/toad/not-right-for-me guy" would be.

On Monday my boyfriend proposed to me. In the cutest, sweetest, I-had-no-idea kinda way. That morning he was relaxed and calm, and gave no impression that today would be any different than the next. He played hooky from work and we decided to play a round of golf. As I was lining up my shot to sink my putt, I peeked in the hole and saw a velvet box.

The only way to describe the next couple of hours was SURREAL. As the words he had been thinking of saying for the past 6 months came flowing out of his mouth, I felt like I had gone deaf. I truly don't remember exactly what he said. I just know I was very emotional and I couldn't stop crying. Although we have talked marriage a bunch of times, nothing could have prepared me for that moment.

Has much changed since he popped the question? Yes, I think it has. We still live together, but I wake up about every hour and stare at the bling on my finger. I still go through my daily routine, but now my thoughts are consumed with ideas and list making.

After the giddiness died down, Scott and I, talked about the new LABEL we have: FEE.ON.SAY.
For some reason that word is a bit too fancy schmancy for us. I'm still good with him being my Scotchy, and me being his love love.

Happy Memorial Day everyone. Now, I gotta start planning!

I'm really good at keeping secrets. It's one of my strongest traits. That's why when Kelly asked me to shoot a boudoir session of her to surprise her soon-to-be hubby Ivo, I said, "Sure! Mum's the word!"

I must admit, after seeing how AMAZING she looked in the shots it was really really hard to not post them on my blog like, yesterday. But a promise is a promise. So I've waited (impatiently...) for her to give him his gift so I could finally share them on my blog.

He saw them, and of course absolutely loved them. I was thrilled to be a part of such a great surprise.

Last year three of the closest women in my life were all pregnant. At the same time. They had their babies within a couple months of each other, and ironically all had BOYS. One day last summer we all hung out and as we set the three lil' guys on my sister's patio swing, we had no idea an annual tradition was beginning.

As I snapped my camera continuously, trying to capture my best interpretation of Anne Geddes style, I couldn't get over the unbelievable calm they had. These almost- newborns seemed to be just fine with my annoying clickety clicking away. After such a successful endeavor, I decided to continue the tradition.

I am proud to announce: Mr. Jack Duffy, Mr. Cole Viramontes and Mr. Tyson Lampkin. These guys are a melting pot of nationalities to say the least- Jack is English and Irish. My nephew Coco is German, Dutch, French and Mexican. Tyson is Croatian, Greek and African American.

And as the song goes.... it's a small world after all...

Eeva and Anthony were two of my first "Christmas card clients". I spent half the day trying to get the perfect shots of them for the card. Try to pose not one, but two toddlers looking adorable in a photo at the exact same time... nearly impossible. By the end of the day, not only was I exhausted, but had a newfound respect for mothers with twins. WOW. God bless their mom Erika.

As we were looking through my view finder, searching for something, anything we may be able to use, Anthony quietly laid his little body down on a step, and Eeva followed his lead, laying on the step below. I FROZE. I said, "Erika, do not move. This is the shot!"

You can't plan those things. I've learned with kids that young, THEY ARE BOSS. I follow them around and wait for the moment to come instead of trying to pose them.

In honor of Mother's Day, I decided to post some recent shots of Erika and her twins because she is one of the most amazing mom's I know. Her patient tone, her sense of humor, her relaxed manner with her babies- I aspire to be HALF the mother she is.

Happy Mother's Day to all you mama's out there! Kick your feet up on Sunday and don't raise your voice once. Be pampered, be lazy, be whatever your heart desires... it's YOUR day.
